Acid Reflux Medicine For Infants
Has anyone experienced having to use medication for acid reflux on their one month old infant?
I have a one month old son who has been spitting up frequently- and about 1-2 times per day he will also spit up and it will come out his nose and mouth which causes him to gasp for air as if he is choking. This really scares me. The doctor said she will prescribe pepsid. And I really don't want to give my son any medicine at such a young age.
I have 4 month old twins who had trouble with reflux starting at about a month old. They are preemies at 6 1/2 weeks early. This is common for preemies and nothign to worry about. But it does concern us parents, especially if our little ones look to be in so much pain.
My daughers were prescribed generic zantac and it made things a lot better. I also kept them sleeping at an incline (I rolled up blanket under the bassinet mattress). Keeping them at an incline helps if they spit out, especially the spit up comes out the nose. I'll just come out and help to make sure that they don't choke on it.
After a month or so they got better so I stopped using the medicine. Like I said, they are now 4 months and has been off the medicine for a while.
Do not worry about giving the medicine, it is pretty safe. Besides, if your baby's reflux gets worst, he will have a hard time eating and will slow down on weight gain. So it's best to give the medicine. Also, sometimes the medicine might not work so your doctor may prescribe something stronger and/or tell you to put something on the formula to help thicken it.
My girls' reflux got better really fast, but for others, they stay on medicine for a longer while. But generally, reflux gets better as they get older and goes away completely around 9 months to a year old.
