Acid Reflux Pain

Why does my acid reflux feel like chest pain?
Its almost like a heart attack. I've been to the doctor and I do take medicine but I just wondered why it hurts so bad. Its a dull pain right at the base of my sternum.
I am not a doctor, so either way you will want to talk to them, but this is what I have to say as a long time sufferer of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.)!
Three part answer information, what not to do, and what to do!
INFORMATION!!!!!!
I have a very severe case of Acid Reflux (G.E.R.D.). I have had to go to the hospital for some of the heartburn that I have had because the pain can become overwhelming or your breathing can be effected. It can be caused by Smoking, Drinking Beverages with caffeine (My case), Drinking Beverages with Alcohol, or can be Hereditary
The good thing about G.E.R.D. is that it can be a temporary thing and can be cured. It is never a permit thing even if you end up with it for the rest of your life it has the ability to be cured.
WHAT NOT TO DO!!!!!!!!
In most cases, stress is a factor to the reflux if you watch what you eat and reduce some of the stress it will help. If you watch what you eat for about a week you should find relief, if you do not then that is when you definitely what to listen to the doctor. Things to watch for are as follows:
Fatty Foods
Citrus Foods
Foods That Contain Grease
Fried Foods
Chocolate (including any Coco)
Caffeine
Smoking
Alcohol
Tomato Based Products
Lactose
WHAT TO DO!!!!
The two foods that I recommend is Black strap Molasses and Raw honey. The apple is better for night time reflux while these will work for just about all of it. What you will do is take about a tsp. of whatever one you chose. Molasses being the better because of strength and nutrition, but must be use to the taste. What the substance will do is stick to the sides of the esophagus and do two things, one is heal and the other is protect.
On the healing end, both substances have a healing property in them, and as they sit on the walls of the esophagus they will heal it. This is also helpful if you have a sore throat in the morning from refluxing.
On the protection end, both substances are high in sugar and when acid that is refluxed comes up to that the sugar will neutralize it and it will not longer be a problem at that point.
I would also look to putting Cinnamon in you diet, it has been know to help with digestion and will help you reduce the amount of acid needed to brake down food, therefore causing you to reflux less.
Acid Reflux and Back Pain: Partners in Crime
You may have never put the two together but acid reflux and back pain can be connected. Whether they present themselves together or separately, the pain can be excruciating.
Understanding the connection will help alleviate symptoms. Acid reflux is the result of acid rising up the esophagus from the stomach. The acid is necessary aid to digestion but it is supposed to stay in the stomach where it is produced.
When the flap at the top of the stomach is not working to keep the acid there where it belongs, acid reflux occurs. The pain and discomfort caused by acid reflux can range from mild heartburn to severe stabbing pain.
It might occur only occasionally and can be remedied with over the counter medicine or it might be a daily problem that requires a prescription to ease the pain.
Acid reflux pain can range from very low in the abdomen all the way up the chest. The pain radiates so that unless you are aware of having the condition, you may not even be able to pin point is origin.
In addition to the stomach and chest, the pain sears at your sides like a cramp and up your back and neck. The upper back and neck pain is most commonly described as stabbing and it feels like you are being stabbed through the chest and out the back and shoulder blades.
When the back pain in question is lower back pain, more thought has to be put into the whole picture. If you suffer from chronic lower back pain, however, there is a good chance that this is related to your acid reflux, as well, but not as a direct result of the actual acid reflux attack.
Doctors recommend not eating near bedtime, as well as sleeping with the head and upper body slightly elevated. The experimenting and change in position and habit puts stress on the lower back, especially if the experimenting puts your body in improper alignment.
The reason the connection is not made immediately to the acid reflux is because the damage occurs over time, applying a little more strain each night.
So that when the pain actually presents itself, the reflux does not come to mind. In fact, it is commonly blamed on something else that recently happened and another thought is not given to it.
The best course of action for acid reflux and back pain that accompanies it is to eat a balanced diet and not over eat in a sitting, as well as daily exercise including yoga which strengthens the muscles in your back and stomach as well as improves your posture.
