Is acid reflux common during pregnancy?

I'm 22 weeks (little over half way, and wow is he a kicker!!) and I've been experiencing really bad acid reflux the past few days to the point where I almost vomit when I burp (baby barf I think they call it). It doesn't matter what I eat either. I can have spaghetti one day and have it, same meal the next day and I won't have it. Right now I just had a bowl of jello and I've got it. Tums (which were approved by my Dr.) aren't helping either. Any suggestions?

Congratulations on your pregnancy! :)

You sound just like me. The little one will be here any day now and I STILL have heartburn and sometimes the acid reflux. I noticed that it happens when I have acidic foods consecutively (lunch and then dinner have things like vinegar, tomatoes, citrus, etc. or I've had a whopping glass of orange juice), if I drink too much fluid while I'm eating, if I lie down right after I eat, or, if I wait too long to eat.

The best relief I found is to eat some yogurt, eat smaller meals throughout the day and make sure to snack. Once those hunger pangs come it's inevitable that the heartburn or acid reflux will follow after eating.

Are Acid Reflux Symptoms More Common in Women?

Acid reflux symptoms in women and men are basically the same, however women often feel they are more prone to acid reflux disease. However, a condition called 'Barrett's Esophagus' is most commonly found in men and is a result of a chronic regurgitation of acid from the stomach into the lower esophagus. Having symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) for more than 10 years can increase the risk of Barrett's Esophagus.

Acid reflux disease occurs when the sphincter of the stomach is not working correctly and stomach acid seeps back up into the esophagus. As with gastroesophageal reflux disease, where stomach contents leak back from the stomach, there can be many uncomfortable acid reflux symptoms. Acid reflux symptoms in women that are often reported include heartburn, regurgitation, chest pain, hoarseness and in severe cases bleeding when stomach acid causes erosion of the esophagus.

Acid reflux symptoms in women can be treated in a variety of ways depending on their severity. Eating a healthy diet consisting of smaller meals and high in alkaline foods as opposed to acid foods is considered a cornerstone of treatment of acid reflux problems. Treatment of mild GERD symptoms and acid reflux symptoms in women like heartburn are often combated with over the counter antacids like Rolaids, Maalox, Pepto-Bismol, Riopan and Alka-Seltzer.

More serious GERD symptoms and acid reflux symptoms in women are often treated by drugs prescribed by a doctor including; Zantac,Tagamet, Pepcid, Axid, Nexium, Prevacid, Prilosec, Protonix and Aciphex. However patients suffering from acid reflux may benefit from homeopathic remedies that don't have the potential serious health concerns that can be incurred from the side effects of these acid reflux drugs.

Heartburn and other acid reflux symptoms in women can also be heightened or more frequently experienced by women who are pregnant. The reasons for increased symptoms include changes in sex hormones and pressure on the woman's digestive organs resulting from the growing fetus expanding the uterus. After pregnancy these acid reflux symptoms with cease if they were only due to the pregnancy.

Some of these acid reflux symptoms in women include the following:

Regurgitation:
often experienced as a 'wet burp', when food comes back up into the mouth.

Heartburn:
heartburn occurs when acid flows back up from the stomach causing pain in the chest, abdomen, and throat.

Nausea:
some women may experience nausea as a symptom of acid reflux.

Vomiting:
often women who experience nausea often experience vomiting as a result.

Difficulty in Swallowing:
difficulty in swallowing can be experienced as a result of heartburn and soreness from stomach acid.

Each of the acid reflux symptoms in women can be treated with diet, drugs and natural remedies. Natural health treatments for acid reflux symptoms in women include; apple cider vinegar, glutamine, Aloe Vera, Licorice Root powder and ginger. Other ways to combat acid reflux symptoms in women include stopping smoking and avoiding tobacco products, avoiding stress, getting more exercise, avoiding tight fitting clothes that put pressure on the abdomen, sleeping with your upper body raised and drinking lots of water.
