Bottled Water Heartburn

What would cause a person to wake up and feel like they are choking and something is stuck in their throat?
I woke up this morning abruptly after feeling like I was choking on something. At first I thought it was fuzz from my blanket since it tends to shed but I couldn't stop coughing to the point that I thought I was going to throw up. I drank about 2 bottles of water and it still feels like I have a lump in my chest and throat. Plus now my throat burns and is all scratchy from coughing so much, Any ideas what could be causing it? I'm just getting over a really bad cold and I had heartburn all day today so I'm not sure if either could be a factor. I'm just paranoid that I somehow swallowed something in my sleep but I don't see how that would be possible.
