Chest Pain Left Side Heartburn
Chest pain left side past eight hours, pressure, sharp pain with deep breath... what could it be?
It started about 8 hours ago, with a feeling of tightness in my chest. As the day progresses, it has gotten worse, and with deep breaths, it really hurts my left chest area. It sometimes hurts to laugh, cough, or eat. However, I was wondering, could this be heartburn? Is this serious?
You never know, it could be a sign of heart attack. Or it could be heartburn, but probably not since you've had it for 8 hrs. If I were you, I'd check with your doctor ASAP, just in case. The sooner you do the better they can diagnose. Also if you choose to leave it, and it turns out to be a heart attack, your heart muscles are slowly being destroyed. It's better to catch it early.

Definition of Chest Pain
Chest pain may commence suddenly and may be described as a acute pain in the chest region. It may affect an individual's ability to do normal activities and may be accompanied by other symptoms such as difficulty breathing, pronounced coughing, pain in the shoulders, neck or jaw and so on.
Not all instances of chest pain are the result of life threatening conditions and could very well be inspired by other less serious conditions that though still unpleasant will not be detrimental to one's health. For example indigestion or heartburn may cause some chest pain. However once chest pain manifests and an person is over a certain age, generally forty years old or older, he or she should consult a doctor to eliminate the presence of any other possibly grave conditions.
Possible Causes
The kind of chest pain that an individual feels will be dependent on the root cause of the chest pain. Some causes of chest pain will include:
Heart Related causes
• Having a heart attack may inspire chest pain. A heart attack will cause an accumulation of pressure in the chest area, this resultant pain may last more than a few minutes. The pain may migrate to the back, neck, jaw, shoulders and arms, but most often the left arm will be affected. It may also be associated with symptoms like shortness of breath, sweating, dizziness and nausea.
• Angina pectoris which is a severe form of chest pain can be the main reason for chest pain. When blood flow to the heart is limited this can cause on and off spells of chest pain. It may be identified by the feeling of pressure or tightness in the chest area. It is typically induced by physical excretion or stress. The pain may be lessened once the activity that caused the chest pain is discontinued.
• Pericarditis which is characterized by an inflammation of the sac enclosing the heart (pericarditis) may trigger chest pain. It will cause a knife like pain that will be concentrated in the chest area. The pain may also be associated with a fever.
• Coronary artery spasm will cause chest discomfort that may be mild or significantly painful. It occurs when arteries that supply blood to the heart begin to spasm, which then causes a brief disruption of the blood supply enteringthe heart.. It may be triggered by activity or even when sedentary. It is not unusual for spasms to disturb sleep.
Other causes
• Heartburn is a regular cause of chest pain. It may be described as a painful, burning sensation behind the breast bone. It is generally associated with a sour taste in the mouth which is also known as regurgitation. This kind of chest pain typically follows a meal and may affect the person for hours. The pain is exacerbated when a person slants the body forward or lies down. It may also be evident upon swallowing. Usually taking a few anti-acids should alleviate heart burn.
• Having a panic attack may induce chest pain. This may be triggered by a grave fear or anxiety which will lead to the development of chest pain, rapid heartbeat, rapid breathing or hyperventilating, excessive sweating and difficulty breathing.
• Pulmonary embolism can additionally cause chest pain. This occurs when there is an obstruction in the lung artery. Symptoms will materialize quite suddenly and may include: a sharp chest pain that is initiated when inhaling and is worsened with each breath or when coughing. It may be followed by difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, anxiety and syncope.
• Sore muscles can cause chest pain. When chest pain initiates from muscle related issues it may begin when an individual twists from side to side or when he or she raises the arms. It is often associated with a condition such as fibromyalgia.
• A condition that affects the gall bladder and pancreas may trigger chest pain. The pain will most often commence in the abdominal area and spread to the chest.
