Cure Heartburn During Pregnancy

Cures for heartburn during pregnancy?

Somehow, I have managed to avoid the dreaded pregnancy heartburn, that is up until last night. I drank some Kool-Aid Lemonade, and oh it was so horrible. I've never experienced heartburn in my life, and I don't have any idea of how to deal with it. It keeps coming back, so I am going to have to find something for sure. What are some ways to cure it, other than taking tums, because even though they are safe, I still refuse to take them. I know I'm stubborn, but I won't even take Tylenol either because I feel like I'm being selfish and should just get through the little aches and pains without medicine!

Well first of all, avoid lemonaid. I've had heartburn all my life and that's one thing I've just given up on lol. Anything really citrusy makes it worse.

Tums are great, as are gaviscon (both are perfectly safe and nothing wrong with taking them). I don't know why people on here are saying Rolaids are okay because they are NOT okay while pregnant. Not in the slightest. Tums and Gaviscon are fine but not rolaids.

If you really don't want to then try drinking some milk. I know tums, rolaids, gaviscon all stopped working on me years ago but a glass of milk will do wonders to calm to the heart burn for a few hours at least.

If you start to experience it when you lie down in bed at night, try putting an extra pillow under your head or raising the head of your mattress by a few inches (using blocks or bricks under the mattress.)

Otherwise, just try to keep note of what foods make it worse and avoid them.

Good luck.

edit: also I noticed a couple people saying to drink pop. Anything carbonated (especially pop) is going to make it worse...trust me on that one lol. I you drink ginger ale slowly it may help (I've had mixed results) but let your glass sit out for a few minutes to go a little flat before drinking it. Any other kind of pop stay away from. It really won't help at all.

Heartburn and Pregnancy Tips

Heartburn and pregnancy go hand in hand because of the hormonal and physiological changes that a pregnant woman undergoes. When a woman is pregnant, her abdomen has more pressure, forcing the acids to go upwards to the esophagus and the throat.

Another reason is because of the increase of hormones in a woman's body, resulting to the softening of the ligaments which keep the lower esophagus muscles closed. Softened ligaments will result to a relaxed LES, causing gastric juices to come through.

If you are pregnant and you want to avoid heartburn, there are many practical tips to follow. Here are some of them:

1. Avoid smoking. Nicotine is found to weaken the LES, so stop smoking. Moreover, it is not really good for your health and your baby's.

2. Don't wear tight clothes and belts. Tight apparels and tight objects around the waist will only add more pressure around the abdomen, pushing the stomach contents upwards.

3. Don't lie down after eating. Wait for at least two hours before you lie down, to ensure that the stomach acids will stay where they should be.

4. Maintain a healthy weight. Too much weight will only increase more pressure on the stomach, making the acids go to the esophagus.

5. Avoid foods that cause the LES to relax. These include fatty food, tomato-based products, citrus fruits and juices, alcoholic drinks, high fat butter and cream, greasy food and caffeine.

6. You are advised to eat low fat food and more vegetables, since these are the ones that are not heartburn triggers.

If your heartburn persists, you should visit a doctor to help treat your condition.
