Dry Throat Heartburn
Dry Throat Heartburn
I think that I might have GERD?

The other day I woke up with a pain in my chest, right behind the sternum. I thought it might be heartburn, because I've never had it before. But too many Tums and cups of Pepto Bismol later, I decided to look it up on the internet. I found GERD here: http://www.wrongdiagnosis.com/g/gerd/symptoms.htm

And the following symptoms match me:
Heart Burn(Maybe, i'm not sure what this is supposed to feel like)
Belching(more than usual)
Pain in the chest
Trouble Swallowing
Tight Throat
Dry Cough(Not very frequent, but more than before)
Increased by eating, but decreased by laying down.

If it is GERD, should I see a doctor?
If not, what could it be?

It does sound like the symptoms I experienced before my doctor diagnosed me with GERD. I went through multiple doctors and specialists over the course of 3 years who persistently misdiagnosed it as Stress or Allergies or simply Heartburn before a doctor finally scoped my throat and saw what the real issue was.

I had trouble sleeping because it always felt like my throat was swelling shut -- a condition that worsened when I was sick. I sometimes had trouble swallowing small objects, like M&Ms or peanuts, and I had frequent heartburn. I didn't have much pain, but that was incidental to my condition, luckily.

You should definitely see a GI specialist. They may try you on Nexium or something like that to see if it helps, before they recommend surgery. In my case, drugs did nothing for it, so I did need surgery to correct the reflux -- a lap nissen fundoplication. That was 6 years ago, and I've been 100% better ever since, with no complaints, pain, or problems.
