Heartburn Acidic Foods

What is causing heart burn?
My husband has been getting heart burn for the past week. He has never had heartburn before in his life. His diet has not changed. He does not eat fatty or acidic food. Nor does he smoke or drink alcohol.
What could be causing his heartburn?
See your health care provider as soon as possible. What causes heartburn? Heartburn is caused by a backflow of stomach acids into the esophagus. When food is swallowed, it travels down a long tube called the esophagus, and a valve (sphincter) at its bottom relaxes to allow the food to enter the stomach. This valve normally only allows food to move downward, but a drop in pressure in the lower esophagus or a weakening of the sphincter muscle can permit a backflow (reflux) of powerful stomach acids into the esophagus. This causes a burning sensation.
Certain foods or circumstances greatly increase the risk of heartburn. Overeating, consuming alcohol, cigarette smoking, and eating fatty or spicy foods can lead to acid indigestion. Pressure on the esophageal sphincter (usually from eating too much, exercising, or lying down after a large meal) can cause a drop in pressure in the esophagus that allows stomach acid to flow back into it.
I hope this helps you. And good luck.
