Heartburn Causing Shortness Of Breath
What is causing my chronic chest pain?
I'm going to the doctor on Wednesday, but I'm really curious if anyone knows what this could be.
About once every month or two I get this odd pain in my chest. It lasts for around a week every time, though last time it lasted for two. It always starts as a tightness in my throat, making it difficult to swallow. It feels like it's deep in my throat. Then it moves down to my sternum, right between my breasts. It causes a shortness of breath because it hurts to inhale fully. After a day or so the pain moves into my chest on the left side, still causing difficulty breathing. It then feels like it leaves through my arm. When it's in my arm, I can't raise it any more than 90 degrees without pain.
I don't think it's heartburn because my pain feels more like a tightness, similar to the need to burp.
What could this be?
You are describing to a tee the pain you feel when having a heart attack. You may be having angina which may precede a heart attack. When I had a heart attack the pain started in my back, moved to the front around the heart area then traveled to my throat till it felt like someone was trying to choke me to death. Pain can be most anywhere (arm, throat, chest, back even jaw). You may have already had some very mild heart attacks. You need to see a cardiologist right away. Talk to your Dr. and ask him/her to refer you to a cardiologist. My Dad had pain in his shoulder over a period of a few months. The Dr. he was seeing told him it was bursitis and gave him steroid injections which didn't help. He called me and told me about the pain (he also thought he was having indigestion) I told him to see a cardiologist. He got an appointment for 2 days after I spoke to him and within 10 days he was in the hospital having bypass. He had 5 blockages. You need to see a Dr. soon. I was a paramedic for years and saw many heart attacks. Hope everything turns out ok for you.
