Home Remedy for Heartburn/Indegestion?
I am 8 and a half months pregnant and have TERRIBLE heartburn, and no antacid tablets (live in regional area and all the shops are closed!) I've tried drinking milk which worked while i was drinking the milk but afterwards it returned with a vengance, i've been drinking lots of water and i'm so uncomfortable i'm getting desperate! Any other ideas?
Should mention that I've never really had heartburn before, this is a first for me, I"m not lying down and don't have any of the usual suspects of the causes of heartburn with the exception of having a whopping great baby wreaking havoc on my internal organs!
Congratulations Rae! There are a few schools of thought as to why people get heartburn. 1- not enough good flora or bacteria in your stomach, 2- too much acidity, 3- believe it or not, too little acidity. With your pregnancy in mind then, there are 3 possible things that could work. For me, baking soda neutralizes stomach acid so quickly, it's like a miracle when I'm in pain - and if I am going to throw up, IT STOPS IT! Then, if it's that you need good bacteria in your stomach, good old yogurt with live bacteria is both healthy for you and baby, and therefore potentially helpful. Lastly; and obviously be careful with this one as you know your body better; believe it or not, cayenne pepper has "capsaicin," a substance that blocks the bodies production of something called "Substance-P" which is scientifically proven to be the carrier of pain signals to the brain, therefore until the body can replenish it's supply of Substance-P, pain will be minimized. While all have their logic and merit, I would still recommend baking soda as the safest, fastest, sure fire way...just a half to whole teaspoon in 6-8 ounces of water and that's it. By the way, if you are very acidic, when you drink the mixture, it will taste sweeter than you would think. That's it neutralizing your acid, so the sweeter the taste, the more acidic you've been. Hope it helps:)
Heartburn Home Remedies That Might Surprise You
Heartburn home remedies are quickly becoming the choice of many sufferers of heartburn, GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and acid reflux disease. This movement to natural remedies is not only due the desire to avoid the serious side effects of other drugs and medicines and the high cost of those medicines, but also to improve overall physical health. More and more doctors and medical schools are now realizing the power and effectiveness of heartburn treatment with natural remedies.
Some people suffer from occasional symptoms, while for others it is a monthly battle and others still find themselves dealing with the burning sensation of heartburn chronically. Those who suffer more than occasional heartburn need to be aware that these symptoms may be due to more serious health problems like acid reflux disease and gastroesophageal reflux disease. Natural home remedies can be used to battle the symptoms and effects of these conditions while helping the body heal, providing relief from other ailments as well.
Heartburn Home Remedies & Your Diet
It is only common sense that lowering your intake of some foods and drinks is the most immediate way to avoid the cause of heartburn. However many people think they need to reduce the spicy and hot food they love, when it is the acidity in many foods that actually causes their discomfort. To build a framework for heartburn home remedies, you must put a proper diet in place. This includes eating the right foods and consuming smaller meals throughout the day as opposed to overeating once of twice a day. It is important for you to know which foods are high in acidity as some of them may surprise you like eggs, meat and some fruits and vegetables.
Heartburn Home Remedies Combat the Cause
Remedies for heartburn work in slightly different ways. Contrary to popular belief it is not just over production of stomach acid leaking up in to the esophagus that it the cause of heartburn. Heartburn, especially in the case of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is caused by too little stomach acid being produced, which results in the food and drink you consume staying to long in the stomach and a higher probability these stomach contents can come back up into the esophagus causing pain and discomfort. For those seeking relief, natural heartburn home remedies can be used to combat either too much or too little stomach acid.
