Heartburn and Prilosec OTC?

I'm 23 weeks pregnant. I've had terrible heartburn for the past 2 weeks or so. I called to ask the doctor what I could take, because TUMS wasn't working at all. They suggested Prilosec OTC so that's what I have been taking however is it safe for me to take it for an extended period of time. I've been taking one a day now since the heartburn started. It doesn't seem to completely help with the problem, but I'm getting a small amount of relief. Anyway, is it safe to take it multiple days in a row and is there anything that you found worked better for your heartburn? It really kicks in at night. Thanks.
BTW I do plan on asking the doctor in the morning. I'd just like to know others experiences.

If they suggested it I would say it's okay. I'm 26 weeks and called my doctor a few weeks ago with the same complaint! They told me to take Pepcid.
