Hot Tea Heartburn
Another Q about heartburn, and sore throat.?
I asked a question earlier about my serious heartburn, and how i think that's what is causing my sore throat. Is it ok to drink Hot Tea? Or what can i do to get my throat to stop hurting. It hurts to swollow, and very scratchy. I called my doc, and they said i could take Pepsid AC for the heartburn, but i just want to get rid of the pain. And is it ok to take the pepsid AC every day, or should i only take it if i need it. My heartburn has been VERY bad the last 3 weeks. Thanks everyone! I'm 23 weeks.
Heartburn is a painful burning sensation felt in the chest due to the reflux of acid. Some heartburn is caused by indigestion while some stems from the more serious gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). If you get heartburn several times a week it is important that you schedule an appointment with your doctor as soon as possible, you may be suffering from GERD.
A good diet is a powerful way for you to cure heartburn at home. A diet rich in vegetables and fiber is a great start.
Here are some foods that can be added to your diet as home remedies to help stop heartburn, sometimes even before it starts:
a. Apple Cider Vinegar:
This is a good way to deal with heartburn, as natural apple cider vinegar promotes healthy digestion. It will also clear the body of toxins at the same time. There are several ways in which you can introduce this to your diet, for example, you have a choice between tablets, capsules or liquid. If you choose liquid you may want to mix it with some water and honey to smooth out the taste.
b. Peppermint oil or tea:
Menthol is the main ingredient in peppermint and it soothes the stomach. By relaxing the muscles of the stomach and the esophagus peppermint leads to less muscle cramping. Oftentimes this cramping is what leads to acid being pushed up into the esophagus. By eliminating this, you then eliminate heartburn. Peppermint also eases gas and symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). Chewing peppermint leaves is another great tasting way to deal with heartburn.
c. Ginger:
Fresh ginger not only tastes delicious but it is one of the oldest home remedies for heartburn. Ginger reduces inflammation associated with heart burn as well as treats nausea. You can add ginger to your food as you cook it or you can eat it raw. There are also ginger teas and tablets at your local health food store. The average adult should take 500mg of ginger to stop heartburn in its tracks.
d. Fennel tea:
Fennel tea is another popular home remedy for heartburn. To make your own fennel tea all you have to do is boil a couple of fennel seeds in water. To add to the healing properties and the taste of this tea, simply add some drops of peppermint oil.
e. Baking soda and water:
This is a tried and true method of treating heartburn. It may not sound appetizing and let’s face it, it tastes terrible, but it will get rid of your heartburn instantly. Add approximately 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda to a glass of warm water and drink it quickly. If you are on a salt restricted diet you should avoid this home remedy for heartburn as baking soda contains sodium.
f. Healthy anti heartburn fruits:
There are several great tasting fruits that can help to curb occasional heartburn. Fruits such as bananas, papayas and rhubarb have been shown to have a dramatic effect on heart burn. Papaya can be eaten fresh or you can choose to purchase tablets at a health food store. As for rhubarb, these stalks and leaves can be eaten raw. They calm the stomach and neutralize the acid that causes heartburn and acid reflux.
g. Chamomile:
It is not an old wives tale that Chamomile tea soothes heartburn. Chamomile is rich in calcium and it will lower the stomach acids that are causing your heartburn symptoms.
Natural remedies like these are a great way for you to deal with occasional heartburn. Keep in mind that it’s important you meet with your doctor to discuss the dosages that are appropriate for you, as well as see if your heartburn is a symptom of a more serious condition.
SORE THROAT
Antibiotic drugs haven't been conclusively proven to speed up the cure for common sore throats, and throat cultures aren't all that accurate. Neverthless, if your doctor has pretty much ruled out strep throat or some other serious condition behind your symptoms, some doctors believe that it's best to slow down, get warm and cozy and baby your aching throat, just like they do. Here's what women doctors suggest.
Fill up your favorite mug. Warm liquids will not only feel good to your raw throat, but they will also help rehydrate your parched mucous membranes. Try to drink at least two quarts of beverages--preferably, caffeine-free--a day until you feel better. Perhaps this would be a good time to try some new herbal teas, hot lemonade or flavored decaffeinated coffees, says Penelope Shar, M.D., an internist in private practice in Bangor, Maine.
In fact, one woman doctor steers women away from antiseptic lozenges, or lozenges that numb the throat. They may contain ingredients that actually irritate your throat, according to Karen Rhew, M.D., of the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders in Bethesda, Maryland.
In a pinch, candy will help. If you don't have any throat lozenges on hand, and you don't want to brave the cold and damp to get to the store, you can just as well use sugarless candy, says Dr. Shar.
Think zinc. Some people find that letting zinc gluconate tablets and lozenges dissolve on their tongues relieves sore throat discomfort. And according to a study conducted at the Clayton Foundation Biochemical Institute of the University of Texas at Austin, zinc gluconate is an effective reliever of sore throat. You can buy zinc gluconate tablets at health food stores. Follow package directions.
Swallow some crushed ice. Sometimes ice can cool the fire of your swallow, according to Dr. Rhew.
Add a pinch of salt. If your mother or grandmother fixed you a saltwater gargle whenever you had a sore throat as a kid, she was on the right track. Dr. Shar says that gargling often with warm saltwater can ease the pain and restore moisture to irritated throat tissues. Mix a pinch of salt with a quarter-cup of warm water. Repeat four or fives times a day.
Warm your neck. Holding a hot-water bottle or warm (not hot) heating pad to your neck can further relieve the pain of a sore throat, according to Dr. Rhew.
Mist is a must. Just as your plants become revitalized with a good misting, your dry throat will thank you for using a cool-mist humidifier to moisten the hot, dry air of your home or office, says Dr. Shar.
Take acetaminophen. Tylenol or other painkillers containing acetaminophen are best for upper respiratory infections, Dr. Shar says.
I hope that helps!!!!!!!
