Aren't there bad effects of Prilosec OTC and not having enough acid in your stomach? (Heartburn)?

I got prescribed Prilosec OTC yesterday for my heartburn and wanted to do a little research on the pill before i started taking them.

It looks like what it comes down to is that it stops/reduces production of acid in the stomach.... Now...from common sense, don't we need the acid to break down foods? Wouldn't stopping the produciton of acid be bad for for you, since the foods won't break down properly? Or am I missing something here...?

Prilosec is what is known as a proton pump inhibitor. Basically, it "blocks" the release of H+ ions, which (in combination with free chlorine ions which are present everywhere, including the lumen of the stomach) make HCl, or hydrochloric acid, which aids in breakdown of fats and carbohydrates in the stomach. This inhibition is irreversible, and generally reduces acid production by 99%. However, breakdown of food products is also dependent on hormones and enzymes present in the stomach and the beginning of the small intestine. Reducing acid production in the stomach will not have much of an effect on food metabolism and will almost certainly reduce your heartburn/GERD symptoms. In addition, Prilosec OTC is intended to only be taken for 14 days, not for long-term therapy. Ask your doctor if you have concerns before you start the regimen - you have every right to be an informed patient.

Heartburn is one of the most common ailments known to humankind. Nearly everyone has experienced it and even though it is not that serious it can cause minor pain and discomfort.

Recent studies suggest that acupressure applied to the acupoint P6 reduces relaxations of the lower esophageal sphincter. These relaxations are the major cause of acid reflux. This could be the beginning of one of the most important discoveries ever made for the treatment of acid reflux disease.

Our stomach contains natural acids. This acid is required for breaking down food substances which sorts them to the right places. While we are eating the presence of proper stomach acid is required for proper digestion of the food.

Some of the more common acid reflux causes include diet and lifestyle. It may not be so easy to change your lifestyle maybe because of the type of job you do which may be hectic and stressful. However making a small change in your diet and knowing what acid reflux foods to avoid can make a huge difference to how much you suffer.
