Symptoms Of Acid Reflux

I think I might have acid reflux but how can I tell for sure? Symptoms?
As the title says I think i might have acid reflux for the past year + or so my throat has been burning (sometimes uncontrollably) at various times during the day (mostly at night). Is this a symptom of acid reflux? If so how should I go on treating it. When my throat has been burning I just try to drink some water but that is only limited relief, is it a good idea that i even drink water during the pain?
Its doesn't feel so much that I am puking up acid it just seems to come up no gag or anything if that is what you mean. But yes it burns like vomit but it just sits there.
You should see your doctor to determine whether or not you have GERD (acid reflux). What you describe sounds serious and uncomfortable, so you should do so as soon as possible. I'm not a doctor, but the acid reflux article on Wikipedia recommened avoiding eating 2-3 hours before bedtime, especially acidic foods (such as citrus fruits), chocolate, milk, and others. There are also some suggestions about changing the position you sleep in (elevating the head of the bed, etc.)... for more, you might want to try looking at the article yourself:

But really, to get the most benefit you should probably consult your physician.
Some Common Symptoms Of Acid Reflux Indigestion
Many folk are confused about the differences that are apparent when assessing the symptoms of acid reflux and indigestion. Acid reflux is usually associated with acid coming back into esophagus from the tummy and indigestion simply refers to partially digested food.
That part of the population known as seniors, silver surfers or plainly old age pensioners are particularly susceptible to acid reflux. Indigestion itself is no respecter of persons and attacks most adults at some time or other.
More mature people often rely on traditional over-the-counter medicines as they have always done and automatically resort to chewing antacid lozenges. This is surprising because as the body ages the amount of acid produced is usually less than in younger days.
In fact, acid is necessary in the stomach to digest the food without harming the stomach lining which is designed to withstand the usual stomach acid. Much of the popular ant-acid medication relies on closing down stomach acid generation which solves the problem of reflux acid; but, at what cost?
It is much better to solve acid reflux and indigestion problems by diet and lifestyle changes which will help in improving the general digestion system. If you have any kind of digestive problem it is not a good idea to eat very cold foods. Likewise the excessive intake of grog, colas, chocolate, coffee, large fatty meals and anything containing aspirin is to be frowned upon as is having large snacks late at night.
If the discomfort is extreme the stomach may well benefit from a full 24 hour fast or, at the very least, a diet of light foods and some warm liquids periodically. Many people use DGL licorice (deglycyrrhizinated licorice)to heal linings of the stomach and soothe any discomfort or pain.
Ultimately, of course, it all boils down to a sensible diet without smoking and using alcohol in moderation. Incorporate an easy-to-manage program of exercises and you're on your way to alleviating indigestion and acid reflux. Nevertheless, even though the cure might be simple it is not easy to put into practice because so many people are really looking for a magic bullet which does not need any will-power.
As is usually the case, you can do a lot to help yourself by using a bit of common sense and making just a few simple adjustments. For instance, losing weight is always a good start as additional pressure from the stomach simply pushes acid from the tummy into the esophagus.
Watch your posture as you bend over because this sometimes results in acid being pumped backwards. As well, adjust your nocturnal posture so that you are slightly raised around the head and shoulders.
A bit of commonsense, can help with many ordinary ailments such as the symptoms of acid reflux indigestion and heartburn.
