Five Ways to Get Rid of Heartburn

You should first get a diagnosis to see if you really have heartburn. If you experience a burning sensation in your chest, throat and mouth, consult your doctor right away before it is too late.

If you have heartburn, there are many ways to treating it. Follow these tips to get rid of heartburn:

1. Be careful with your diet

There are food and drinks that cause the lower esophagus sphincter to weaken. A weakened LES will pave way for stomach acids to reach and burn the esophageal lining, which might be serious if left untreated. Therefore, you should exclude these from your diet: fatty food, citrus fruits and juices, spices like chili and onions, alcohol, caffeine, high fat sauces, creams and soups, tomato-based products and greasy and oily food.

With so many food types to avoid, it might get hard for you to practice the right diet. You should post a list of food groups to avoid and those that you can eat on a place where you can easily see it. You can post it on your ref if you like.

One of the most helpful things to do if you want to practice the right diet for heartburn is keeping a food journal. List everything you ate and drank and if you have heartburn, you might determine which of them caused it.

2. Take heartburn medicines

Medications include antacids and histamine blockers. Antacids are medicines which aim to decrease the production of acids in the stomach and incite the production of mucus and bicarbonate.

Another type of medication worth trying is a histamine blocker. Histamine is a chemical which promotes the production of acids. Therefore, histamine blockers act by stopping the actions of histamine. It will take thirty to ninety minutes to feel their effects. The effects will only last for six to twenty-four hours. If you are suffering from serious cases of acid relfux, you are recommended to take two doses.

3. Relax.

Many patients report experiencing worse heartburn attacks when they are stressed. There are many ways how to manage your stress, among them are yoga, meditation and acupuncture.

4. Stop smoking.

Nicotine is a factor that can cause heartburn. Apart from this, it is found that smokers are prone to heartburn by seventy percent compared to non-smokers, and if you already have heartburn, your symptoms are worse.

5. Use an acid reflux pillow.

Positional therapy is important if you want to get rid of heartburn at night. One of the things you can do is raising the head of your bed by six to eight inches, or using an acid reflux pillow. It raises your head and torso by the same level, which ensures stomach acids will not slide to the esophagus and throat.
