Tomato Sauce Heartburn

My boyfriend has a lot of heartburn when i make spicy foods or make foods with tomato sauce...?
any suggestions on what he can take or even do... the problem is that he loves spicy things.. sometimes he will eat half a bottle of tums at night and i know that can't be good for him.... what have any of you done to help... and there has been research done that prilosec isn't so good for u like they say it is...
